Summary
Catalogue of 154 prints by 41 artists from the holdings of the largest collection of drawings and prints in the world, the museum "The Albertina" of Vienna, located in a neoclassical style palace in the center of the city, former palace of the Habsburg family. Founded in 1776, the Albertina, as it is called by the Austrians, has more than a million graphic works. The exhibition comprises 154 engravings from the Austrian institution. The show is organized in a linear narrative, starting from the Renaissance to the era of contemporary art. The exhibition tells the story of Western art between the period of 1466 and 1991. The famous woodcut that gives its name to the exhibition, "Rhinoceros", by the German artist Albrecht Dürer, is one of the works on display. Xylography is the type of engraving that uses a wood matrix. Dürer's rhino, of precise traces and gigantic value for art historians, was produced through reports that the German engraver received from Lisbon merchants. That is, Dürer had never seen such an animal in his life, which makes his work all the more impressive due to the engraving's resemblance to the animal.
