Summary
On September 20, 1960, one of the most important housing projects of Latin American modernity was inaugurated in Mexico City: the Independence Social Services and Housing Unit. Built by the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) and designed by an interdisciplinary team of architects, planners, and visual artists led by Alejandro Prieto and José María Gutiérrez, the Independencia Unit found a radically new way of making housing in a political, economic, and political context. and deeply complex and contradictory ideological. In addition to 2,235 homes divided into three different types (single-family houses, multi-family buildings, and apartment towers), the proposal included an ambitious program of civic, educational, commercial, cultural, sports, and health spaces, framed by a vast network of parks, gardens, squares and playgrounds. This book offers a meticulous collective analysis of an urban-architectural project that reminds us, in the midst of contemporary housing crises, that other housing is possible and that there are more humane and comprehensive ways to manage, plan, design and build our settlements.
