- Summary
- In a series of related articles, this book reconstructs the meaning of nineteen key words of the pre-Hispanic and colonial Inca sociopolitical language (eg, apu, ayllu, kuraqa, qhapaq, suyu, willka). One of the main sources of this study are the more than 1,000 pages of texts that were written in Quechua between the 16th century and the beginning of the 19th century, that is, while a "republic of Indians" continued to exist, backbone of its own institutions and elites, which used Quechua as the language of government. The author investigates the formation of these words and their semantic evolution as historical contexts changed until reaching their current meanings in the different varieties of the language. He also brings to light the iconographic expressions that some of these concepts had both in pre-Hispanic and colonial times. Combining philology, iconography and historical anthropology, this book outlines a new understanding of the political systems created by the Andeans in the last pre-Hispanic centuries and the evolution of these institutions until today.
