- Summary
- Museum Island in Berlin contains some of the world's richest collections of archeology and visual arts. While other museums were based on noble and princely treasures, the Berlin ones were scientifically based - something the museum people were very proud of. The collections in Berlin were built according to a plan laid out by museum staff. However, the original intention quickly disappeared. What was science also changed. In its place came a restless collection of works of art and architectural monuments. After the First World War, the collecting mania was replaced by the more modest hope of keeping together what was collected. And of the original idea for the museum, which was crystal clear to the original builders, there is not much left. Jan Bo Hansen (b. 1948) has a M.Sc. degree in German and history and has for many years written about Germany in the daily newspaper Information and Weekendavisen. He has previously published books about the German capital: Berlin (1997), Berlin as German Federal Capital (2000) and The Wall. The Story of a Political Building (2009)
