Summary
The book central themes are neocolonial architecture, housing reform, public gardens, regionalism and hygiene. The approach to such issues is based on the activity of the public health physician Amaury de Medeiros (1893-1928). The work focuses on the period between February 1923 and October 1926, when Amaury de Medeiros headed the hygiene services of Pernambuco and promoted a broad reform of health and medical care in the state. Although, on that occasion, however, the doctor had a no less relevant action in the field of urbanism and architecture, he played a decisive role in a set of achievements of the state government - directed by his father-in-law Sergio Loreto - and municipal government - directed by his uncle Antônio de Góes - which profoundly interfered in the features then assumed by Recife. From it came initiatives for neighborhood urbanization plans, the creation of squares and the construction of buildings. Amaury was responsible for some of the most notable constructions erected in Recife in the neocolonial style, for the afforestation of streets and the creation of picturesque squares and for the drainage works of lagoons and swamps that allowed the urbanization of Boa Viagem and Derby and the expansion of several other neighborhoods. He formulated and directed one of the first national initiatives for the construction of low-income housing at the initiative of the government. In Rio de Janeiro and Recife, Amaury de Medeiros was involved in the formulation of reform projects for the country, discussed within the scope of the Brazilian Association of Education, the Bandeirantes Club of Brazil, the Brazilian Society of Hygiene, the Brazilian Association of Urbanism, the Northeast Regionalist Center and medical societies. His interlocutors included influential intellectuals, artists and professionals, including Gilberto Freyre, journalist Annibal Fernandes, poet Olegario Marianno, urban planner Nestor de Figueiredo and physicians Carlos Chagas, Clementino Fraga, Fernando Magalhães, Ulysses Pernambucano, Octavio de Freitas, Aggeu Magalhães and Alfredo de Moraes Coutinho.
