The story of the twelfe-year search for an answer to the question Can magnetism produce electricity?, which resulted from Oersted's chance discovery of electromagnetism in 1820. From Paris to London to Geneva, 1820-1831, we observe the experiments of Hans Oersted, André-Marie Ampère, Michael Faraday, and other researchers, their disagreements until the final solution is reached.
