- Summary
- Autoimmunity, or horror autotoxicus as it was called, results from a failure of the mechanisms that are normally responsible for maintaining self-tolerance. Our understanding of this spectrum of diseases stems from a number of milestone experiments in the 1950s and 1960s, which included the observation that precipitating antibodies to thyroid tissue were present in the sera of patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis.
- Since these seminal experiments, one of the most rapidly developing areas in biological science has unfolded. The book aims to describe the many ways in which the body prevents production of horror autotoxicus. It describes how autoimmune diseases are detected and treated and will appeal to all immunologists who want to know the state of the art and where it is heading.
