Summary
  • Although individuals with PWS and their families face many of the same problems as others who are developmentally disabled, the unique characteristics of the syndrome - cognitive impairment and gross obesity due to uncontrollable hunger - require special care.
  • Each chapter addresses the everyday concerns of PWS individuals and their families. The text presents historical, diagnostic, genetic, and medical information to orient the reader, including current research. The major portion of the book deals with pragmatic guidelines that cross countries and cultures and is directed to health, education, and other specialists in academic, clinical, and community settings.
  • Management of Prader-Willi Syndrome brings together the contributions of professionals with considerable expertise in diagnosis and management of PWS. Clinical, social, family, and community issues are explored and management strategies identified. To sharpen the reader's perceptions of the "human dimensions" of PWS, selected personal experiences of parents are integrated throughout the text.
  • Management of Prader-Willi Syndrome describes strategies for interventions that are appropriate to an interdisciplinary approach.
  • Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) is a recognizable pattern of altered growth and development. Affected persons face life as potentially overweight, short, sexually immature, developmentally delayed individuals with poor gross motor skills. Usually mildly retarded, stubborn, egocentric, and emotionally labile, they rarely develop the ability to cope with their insatiable hunger and require environmental restrictions to prevent life-threatening obesity.
