Summary
"Trevor Huddleston, as a young monk from the Community of the Resurrection, lived in the squats of Sophiatown, where he saw at first hand the appalling conditions that many black Africans were forced to live in. A major figure in the battle against apartheid in South Africa, his controversial book Naught For Your Comfort (1956) awakened Western consciences to what was really going on in that tortured land." "At the height of his fame, however, he was recalled from South Africa. As a monk, he was bound by his vow of obedience, but to this day many remain baffled by the decision. After his recall, he served many pained and fruitful years as an Anglican bishop in three dioceses - Masasi, Stepney and Mauritius. In retirement, he lived at the mother house of his order in Mirfield, Yorkshire. Yet his last years were not happy; after the collapse of apartheid, he was able to return to South Africa, but never received the recognition that he thought he deserved. As he faded from public view, he suffered periods of deep depression and uncertainties about his fundamental beliefs."--BOOK JACKET.
