- Summary
- "1961: Modern environmentalism would soon become a potent national movement, and a young lawyer from Oregon named Mike McCloskey was headed for the thick of it. Fresh from law school, McCloskey was hired that year as the first field organizer for the Sierra Club - then a California-based outdoor club with 25 employees. He roamed the Northwest wilderness in a Volkswagen, learning the issues and cultivating the practical, grass-roots approach that would define his career. Over the next 40 years, he and the conservation movement grew up together, with McCloskey rising to lead what became the most powerful environmental organization in the world." "McCloskey helped pave the way for the original Wilderness Act in 1964. He successfully lobbied for new national parks and wilderness areas, from the North Cascades to the Redwood National Park. As executive director of the Club, he was present at the first Earth Day in 1970, pushed Congress to enact more than 100 environmental laws, and built Sierra Club membership from 70,000 to over half a million." "McCloskey headed the Sierra Club during an exceptional moment in environmental history, but his tenure was no walk in the park. The large and very public Sierra Club was fraught with pitched battles and brutal politicking - both from within and without. He survived the ouster of his mentor, the charismatic but controversial David Brower, and advanced conservation in spite of hostile politicians, even helping to expel Ronald Reagan's virulently pro-development Interior Secretary James Watt from office."--BOOK JACKET.
