Summary
When the commoner Simon Boccanegra unseats his rival, the nobleman Fiesco, as the new leader of the Italian city, Simon discovers that Amelia, an orphan raised by Fiesco's family, is his long-lost daughter. Although Amelia is in love with Gabriele Adorno, Fiesco has already promised her hand in marriage to Paolo. Assuming his new fatherly role, Simon refuses to permit his malevolent colleague's desire for Amelia's hand. As father and daughter form a new bond, deception and desperation within both factions of Genoa's people lead to Simon's untimely death.
