- When the commoner Simon Boccanegra unseats his rival, the nobleman Fiesco, as the new leader of the Italian city, Simon discovers that Amelia, an orphan raised by Fiesco's family, is his long-lost daughter. Although Amelia is in love with Gabriele Adorno, Fiesco has already promised her hand in marriage to Paolo.
