Summary
The Havana Biennial, a space for confrontation and reflection of particular relevance in the international scene of the fine arts, will celebrate twenty-five years of existence with its tenth edition, which will bring together more than 200 artists from some forty countries. The title "Integration and Resistance in the Global Era" will be the central topic of reflection. Projects and works from Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, Asia and the Middle East, and to a lesser extent from North America, Europe and Australia will handle the problems of integrating to a highly complex global world due to the peculiarities of so many societies and cultures. This catalogue of the 10th edition of the Bienal de la Habana remembers the first 25 years of Bienal and the participation of more than 150 artists from 50 countries who reflected with their artistic creations on the antagonisms and hostilities as well as the utopias and programs that have resulted from the phenomena of globalization particularly in the end of the first decade of the 21st century. Until now the Biennial was dedicated to the visual arts from Latin America, Africa and Asia, and to artists from those regions living around the world. The restricted focus on the so-called "Third World" or "South" will no longer apply, and from now on the event has included artists from all over the world. Participating artists and collectives included renowned names like Leon Ferrari (Argentina), Luis Camitzer (Uruguay-USA), Maria Elvira Escallón (Colombia), Abraham Cruz Villegas (Mexico), Alexandre Vogler (Brazil), Julio Quaresma (Angola-Portugal), Raul Quintanilla (Nicaragua), and many more. This internationally acknowledged event was made possible through unconditional solidarity of artists, institutions, foundations and foreign governments, after it was organized under economically difficult circumstances, soon after Cuba was severely affected by 3 devastating hurricanes. This edition commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution and pays tribute to political and social leader Fidel Castro.
