- One goal the editors and compilers of this volume have set is getting their bearings in the current state of art-historical approaches to the medieval period. The circumstances of Soviet scholarship long curtailed certain avenues of research, and now that scholars can choose any method, the question arises which methods are the most effective and legitimate. Outlining the methods that are historians have used beginning with Panofsky's 1939 elboration of iconology, the editors indicate the ways in which the authors in this volume exemplify the various tools of modern art history.
