The book traces the origin of Russian geographical names of the Spitsbergen archipelago. It provides detailed biographical information of Russian scientists, researchers, coast-dwellers, whose names are now mapped on the archipelago, and summarizes the history of their assignment. It sketches the history of the discovery and investigation of the archipelago. The book is illustrated with portraits, views of geographic features, some moments of field work, etc., many of which have hitherto not been known to a wider audience. More than 200 literary sources and archival materials were used in researching this book. The book is intended for readers interested in the history of polar research in the Arctic and its toponymy.
