Summary
"This is a history of Mount Egmont, or Taranaki as the Moari people have always known it. The story starts in mythological times, when Taranaki was one of a group of "restless mountains" in the centre of the North Island (Te Ika a Maui), with Ruapehu, Pihanga, Tauhara, Ngaurahoe, Tongariro and Patauaki. There are chapters on the Maori associations with what is now the Edmont national park, where in recent years numerous undisturbed occupation sites have been found. As the mountain starts, geographically, a few kilometres from the park boundary at the coastline, where the land rises gradually at first, and then more and more steeply towards the summit, events that took place outside the park have been included to give continuity to the story. There are chapters on the Waikato invasions of the early nineteenth century, on the arrival of the English settlers at Ngamotu in the 1840s, and on the landwars of the 1860s. Early climbs by Europeans are described, and early efforts to find gold. There are chapters on the formation of the park and its administration, and on the introduction and control of feral animals. The author has had a long association with Mount Edmont as climber, tramper and skier and as a member of the Edmont National Park Board for 21 years"--Take from inside front cover.
