Summary
A booklet accompanying an exhibition on the Jews, held at the state archive in Hessen. Traces the general history of the Jews in Germany, with some mention of their status in Hessen. Pp. 22-23 deal with persecutions from the Middle Ages to the beginning of emancipation. Pp. 41-44 discuss racial antisemitism in Oberhessen from 1880 on, and the role of Otto Böckel. Mentions the influx of Ostjuden in Hessen after 1918 and the popularity of Nazism in the 1920s-30s. Pp. 47-61 trace the history of the Jews between 1933-45. By 1937, 45% of the Jews had left Hessen-Nassau and another wave of emigration took place in 1938-39. Thousands were deported from the region in 1942; only a few survived the camps.
