- Summary
- A girl, Hazel Woodus, a clergyman, Edward Marston and a squire, Jack Reddin are bound together by love, lust and ignorant superstition. Hazel is portrayed as a child of nature, close to the earth and its flora and fauna. There are many dire warnings about what will happen to her if she is torn from these. Unfortunately she is very beautiful and forthright and innocent so the clergyman marries her when, to our modern eyes, she is uncomfortably young. There are long passages of elaborate metaphor and mysticism, and a melodramatic ending.
