Summary
In ch. 5, "L'unification religieuse et sociale: La répression des minorités", the section "Les offensives contre les juifs et les crypto-judaïsants" (pp. 143-167), by Catherine Brault-Noble and Marie-José Marc, traces the persecution of Jews and Conversos by the Spanish Inquisition throughout its history. Deals with the main phases of persecution between the 15th-18th centuries. The first decades of the Inquisition were marked by many autos-da-fé. The arrival of Portuguese Conversos at the end of the 16th century incited the Inquisition to begin a relentless hunt for "Judaizers", whatever their social status. The early 18th century witnessed a last wave of persecution. At first, the Inquisition was motivated by religious zeal, but it was gradually affected by popular antisemitism and economic interests. The "limpieza de sangre" statutes introduced racial and social discrimination into Spanish society. Contends that few Conversos became sincere Christians and many who continued to observe Judaism chose to go into exile. Those who stayed were tracked down, caught, and condemned. Their actual numbers are not known.
