- Abstract: Influences of vitamin B6 on growth processes, enzyme function, and metabolism are examined in light of recent scientific research on the vitamin. Metabolism, metabolic regulation, biosynthesis, and inactivation of B6 compounds are described. An overview of vitamin B6 effects specific to a state (pregnancy, neoplasia), an organ (the brain), and a system (immune-lymphoid system) is presented. The role of vitamin B6 on enzyme action, hormone induction, and gene product expression is evaluated. A discussion of vitamin B6 absorption and nutriture completes the text. Developments in specific research areas are reviewed and extensive bibliographies conclude each chapter. (nzm).
