Summary
Abstract: Invited papers from a 1980 conference sponsored by the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation and the University of Rochester Medical Center focus on various aspects and problems of the adolescent mother. An overview of the incidence, risks, and consequences of adolescent pregnancy and childbearing is provided, along with a discussion of the prevention of pregnancy during adolescence. Biologic, obstetric, and neonatal risks; relationship of gynecologic age to neonatal outcome; nutritional risk compared to adult mothers; psychosocial consequences (e.g., mother-infant interaction, child abuse and neglect); and special care programs for pregnant adolescents are examined. A review of the effectiveness of Title VI grants under P.L. 95-625, and research priorities developed by the conference committee and the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation also are given to assist national plans in the area of adolescent pregnancy and childbearing.
