- Abstract: Recent research on the gastrointestinal absorption of calcium and relevant vitamin D metabolism including hormonal function of vitamin D3 is reviewed. Four major areas of vitamin D metabolism are emphasized: hepatic metabolism, renal metabolism, vitamin D transport, and regulation of the renal vitamin D endocrine system. Calcium transport, effects of age on calcium absorption, adaption to reproductive states, adaption to calcium deprivation, nutritional and endocrine aspects, and pharmacological aspects of calcium absorption also are surveyed.
