Summary
In N.Y. for a visit, North Carolina girl Ava had her picture taken by an admiring friend; the photo caught the eye of an MGM talent scout; a screen-test followed. Despite her lack of experience or talent, Ava's "stunning beauty" won her a Hollywood-starlet contract, in true Cinderella fashion. But for years her fame came from off-screen activities: brief marriage to ardent, insecure Mickey Rooney; an oppressive affair with Howard Hughes; living-in-sin (then marriage) with Artie Shaw. After her career took off Ava stepped up her drinking and her love-life--reaching her high point when alternating between a series of Spanish matadors and hard-won husband Frank Sinatra. Later, largely choosing the expatriate idle-life over fading stardom, there'd be one strong performance--in Night of the Iguana--and affairs with John Huston, George C. Scott, and ... Adlai Stevenson. Some readers may be put off by the pop-magazine manner and lack of documentation. But, for movie-gossip fans of the old school: a busy catalogue of clinches and brawls.
