Summary
Bringing investigative reporting to bear on contemporary classical music, Epstein presents 13 profiles and interviews to take an inside look at musicians and the creative process. She portrays Leonard Bernstein teaching young conductors at Tanglewood; Yo Yo Ma, Rudolf Serkin and Seiji Ozawa discussing their musical philosophies, their personal feelings about their art and the creative process; and Vladimir Horowitz discussing his legendary career. Epstein does not restrict herself to the lives of celebrities, but includes portraits of lesser-known musicians. These include Cecylia Arzewski, a child prodigy schooled by Itzhak Perelman; Pinchas Zuckerman, the first female associate concert master of a major symphony orchestra; Hugo Burghauser, who brought European practices to the United States; and Dorothy DeLay, the first woman master violin teacher of Western music. Epstein covers their successes and failures, psychology and techniques. ISBN 0-07-019544-7: $17.95.
