Summary

Describes the attempts of the Vatican under Popes Pius XI and Pius XII to conciliate Hitler, and their support for him in what they saw as a struggle against the common enemy - communism. This policy implied maintaining silence on atrocities, including the persecution and extermination of the Jews. Asserts that Pius XII, with his international connections and excellent information network, was well informed. In Germany, the Church protested only against infringements on its own rights. In Austria, virulent Catholic antisemitism had prepared the ground for Nazism. Some Catholic leaders in France approved of the Vichy anti-Jewish laws. The Catholic puppet regime in Slovakia cooperated with the Nazis in persecution of the Jews. The Pope himself never attempted to intervene on behalf of the Jews, even when over 1,000 Jews were deported from Rome in 1943.
