- Summary
- This catalog was published for the Saint Louis Art Museum in conjunction with the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, at Cody, Wyoming, by Harry N. Abrams. The 180 plates highlight Remington's diverse artistic pursuits--paintings, drawings, photographs, and sculptures. MCullough sketches a portrait of Remington, a man of powerful and complex personality. Burke places him in the context of his artistic generation at home and abroad. Hassrick traces the artist's development from a magazine illustrator to a versatile painter. Shapiro shows that Remington's cantilevered bronzes were at the forefront of developments in Europe and America. Seelye explores the artist's ability as a writer of fiction. The volume also includes comparative illustrations of works by his contemporaries, and views of the artist painting or adventuring in the west, and shows how Remington was much more than an artist of the American West.
