- Summary
- An account of the Waldheim Affair by a British journalist resident in Austria for five years, using it as a starting-point for a study of Austrian society's response to the Anschluss and to collaboration with the Nazi regime. Surveys Waldheim's wartime career, as well as postwar Austrian politics and the attempt to create a new Austria based on denial of the past. Comments on the pervasive antisemitism in Austrian society and politics, especially in the nationalist Freedom Party, one of whose leaders was ousted after admitting that he was of Jewish origin. Gives a detailed account of Waldheim's presidential campaign, emphasizing press accusations of the existence of a "Jewish conspiracy" against him. Argues, however, that these manifestations reflect Austrian xenophobia, evasion of responsibility, insensitivity to others' concerns, and political opportunism rather than sympathy for Nazism.
