Summary
Analyzes the literary development of Peter Weiss, the German Jewish dramatist, who fled Nazi Germany in 1934. Describes his work as an attempt to come to terms with his situation as an exile from his homeland and from German literature, and with his guilt for having escaped the Holocaust. His outsider role enabled him to see clearly the resistance of the German public to knowledge of the past; he attempted to break it down by aesthetic means, most directly in his documentary drama "Die Ermittlung" on the Auschwitz war crimes trial. On pp. 145-185 discusses this work and its antecedents, including Weiss's visit to Auschwitz.
