- Summary
- Traces the origins of Spanish antisemitism to the early 14th century, when the stereotype of the Jew as a usurer and as a cause of the plague became widespread. Describes the pogroms of 1391 in various Jewish communities. In the 15th century, antisemitism also increased due to the decree against usury (1450) and the regulations of Toledo which legalized discrimination. Relates the establishment of the Inquisition, the plight of the Spanish and Portuguese Conversos, the persecution of Judaizers during the 17th century, and the attacks which took place between 1720-25. Includes statistical tables on Inquisition tribunals and a lengthy bibliography (pp. 324-351).
