- Analyzes the views of various French philosophers and scientists on the subject of the unity and diversity of the human race, ethnocentrism, racism, nationalism, etc. Pt. 2 (pp. 113-196), "Races", deals with racial theories. Distinguishes between racism (i.e. racist behavior) and racialism (the theory of racism). Analyzes the theories of Buffon, Taine, Renan, and Gobineau, noting that Renan opposed the Aryan to the Semitic race and denigrated the cultural level of the Jews. Among the figures discussed in pt. 3, "Nations", is Maurice Barrès. Mentions his xenophobia and antisemitism.
