Summary
This book contains a wide selection of essays on Canadian federalism by Canadian scholars past and present. Authors represented include Bora Laskin, F.R. Scott, Alan Cairns, J.A. Maxwell, and Albert Breton. Some of the essays have attained the status of classics, while others are less well known; all provide fresh insights on the complexities of federalism in Canada as understood by leading scholars and critics over the past half-century. Included in an appendix are key sections of the original British North America Act of 1867 and of the Constitution Act, 1982. The essays are grouped into four sections: the constitutional division of powers, the social and economic background, the partisan politics of federalism, and intergovernmental relations. Each section includes an introduction by the editor of the volume, who interprets the essays and relates them to recent and current events. All of the essays are complete and unrevised.
