Summary
Analyzes opinions on the rise of Nazism and antisemitism in four periodicals published by various Protestant (Reformed) movements in the Netherlands from 1932-40. Ch. 4 (pp. 38-59) contains an introduction on Nazi racist and antisemitic ideology and reactions in the Dutch Reformed periodicals. "De Waarheidsvriend" was critical of the fact that the German Church acknowledged Hitler as the leader and tolerated the persecution of Jews. It rejected the views of the NSB, and pleaded for conversion of the Jews. After 1935 the "Gereformeerd Weekblad" tended to adopt a positive attitude to Nazism. It blamed the Jews for their own persecution due to their involvement in the death of Christ. "De Wekker" rejected Nazism; it showed an interest in the Jews and was active in conversion. "De Saambinder" did not deal with political developments. Argues that the Reformed Dutch community showed harsh (but often latent) signs of antisemitism, based on theological, economic, or political motives. also deals with the theological debates in the German Churches regarding Nazism.
