- Surveys relations between West Germany and the State of Israel, and German attitudes to Jews and to the Holocaust from 1945 to 1990. Notes initial German indifference to the fate of the Jews, which changed with the publication of Anne Frank's diary and the Eichmann trial. Describes wrangling over reparations payments and war crimes trials and the statutes of limitations concerning them; in each case Germany accepted responsibility for the Holocaust only under international pressure. Reports on antisemitic vandalism and considerable percentages of antisemitic and anti-Israel responses in opinion polls as late as 1990. also describes East German antisemitic policy under the guise of anti-Zionism.
