Summary
This report is a review of scientific knowledge regarding the learning disabilities of these children. Its purpose is not only to summarize the current facts, but especially to point out crucial gaps in our understanding. We are dealing with a poorly defined population, and we have no standard or generally accepted systematic screening program through which every child could be tested for a learning disability. The last few years have seen encouraging developments in these areas of research; however, one reaches the sobering conclusion that an all-out systematic research attack on the problem of learning disabilities is long overdue. The report reviews research on central processing dysfunctions in children in three major areas. First, dysfunctions in the analysis of sensory information includes auditory, visual, and haptic processing. Second, dysfunction in the synthesis of sensory information covers multiple stimulus integration and short-term memory. Thirdly are dysfunctions in symbolic operations concerning auditory language, decoding and encoding written language, and quantitative language. Future research needs are also summarized.
