Summary
States that many Jews strongly identified with the French republic and occupied high offices in the French administration, the army, the judicial system, and in political life between 1870-1940. They were often prey to political antisemitism and accused of turning France into a "Jewish republic", while the press conveyed anti-Jewish stereotypes. Argues that these high Jewish officials were betrayed by their ideal republic: their files were always marked with the racial terms "Jew" or "Israélite", and under the Vichy regime they were disposed of and abandoned to their tragic fate at the hands of the Nazis. Many joined the resistance movement.
