Summary
Dissatisfaction with the current state of health care in the U.S. has been accompanied by accusations that a free market in health care has failed. Wasley presents a brief history of medical regulation and its unintended consequences, and takes a look at what the providers and receivers of health care are saying. These cover the problems and frustrations faced by doctors, nurses, and hospital administrators, and the concerns of patients. Her analysis shows that the fundamental flaw in the system is the lack of consumer power over responsibility for spending on medical care. Wasley analyzes some of the European, Canadian, and British health care systems, and whether or not they would provide a workable solution for the United States. Her proposals for reform include measures to remove government distortion of the insurance industry and the creation of tax free medical savings accounts. ISBN 0-932790-88-7: $19.95.
