Summary
An expansion of an article published in the collection "Erinnern, Bedenken, Lernen" (1990). Contrary to the supposition that Jews never lived in Singen, proves by documents that individual Jews lived there from the 17th century. From the beginning of the 20th century many Jewish businesses - described in detail - were established in Singen. Antisemitic excesses took place even before the Nazi regime. After 1933, many Jews emigrated and some escaped over the nearby border to Switzerland, together with many other German and Austrian refugees who came to Singen in order to cross the frontier. In 1940 Singen was declared "Judenfrei". Out of 66 Jews, 30 emigrated, 14 were murdered in concentration camps; the fate of the others is unknown.
