Summary

This volume is a memoir of American Modernist painter and writer Theresa Bernstein (1890-2002). Living until the age of 112, she married fellow painter and etcher William Meyerowitz. Bernstein was a founding member of The Philadelphia Ten, a forgotten female art group that thrived for more than 25 years before fading from view after World War II. The Philadelphia Ten was a group of professional female painters and sculptors who promoted their work through annual exhibitions in the city beginning in 1917. In this work, Bernstein presents herself as the child, the young woman, the artist, and the wife. In 1912, she settled in Manhattan. Her studio near Bryant Park and Times Square allowed her to paint a cross-section of New Yorkers; she also painted harbors, beaches, fish, and still-life. She and her husband William Meyerowitz lived for many decades in a rent-controlled loft-style studio apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, just one block from Central Park West, and this studio was her home at the time of her death.
