- Note
- "This letter, composed by Erasmus at Hutten's request, is the earliest biography of the now canonized Sir Thomas More. The original can not he traced but the greater part of this epistle was first published in 1536 and it has been incorporated, with varying degrees of acknowledgment, in all the biographies of More from Nicholas Harpsfield to Professor Chambers. But, apparently, it has only once before been completely Englished, viz. by Francis Morgan Nichols, and buried in the third volume of his Epistles of Erasrnus. The Latin text here used is taken from Professor Allen's Opus Epistolarum and this translation was made by Miss Laverne Madigan."
