- In Haliford, a Yorkshire mill town an innocent young couple, Edward and Rose, meet, and are attracted. When he misses a meeting with her, she assumes she has been stood up, and moves to London with her friend. She gets work as a waitress. He comes into a small amount of money, and decides to follow her, and find her in the city. She changes jobs and lodging, but he finds her in the end. They resume their relationship. One evening near Trafalgar Square they are caught up in a fight between fascists and communists, and separated. Rose twists her ankle, and is rescued from the crowd by an apparently friendly women, who turns out to be a procuress, who has been looking for an innocent, to satisfy the vile whims of a pervert. Despite this sudden lurch into melodrama, all ends reasonably happily.
