Summary
Snobs and Sardines: Rhondda Schooldays is the sequel to Mary Davies Parnell's charming first book of memoirs, Block Salt and Candles: A Rhondda Childhood. We now follow Mary to Porth County Girls School, meet her new friends, teachers and the formidable headmistress, Miss Hudd. We discover the joys of school sports day, the horrors of exams and school dinners ("noxious boiled cabbage and semolina like glue"). Mary finds a talent for French and for snapping needles to avoid Needlework ("double agony"). We also follow Mary and her fellow pupils through their many adventures at school parties, outings, opening days, and the annual school Eisteddfod, where Mary finds, to her shock, that she has made the piano final. Full of the same lively wit and poignant details that enliven Block Salt and Candles, Snobs and Sardines is also a fascinating portrait of Rhondda life in the 1940s. Mary Davies Parnell's infectious style, her accurate ear for dialogue and her sharp eye for detail, makes this book not only indispensable to fellow Porth County alumni, but a joy for the general reader.
