- The first volume of this series contains shorter fictional works by James Baldwin, Gwendolyn Brooks, W. E. B. DuBois, Ralph Ellison, Langston Hughes, and other lesser known authors. The second volume contains three plays: "A Raisin in the Sun" by Lorraine Hansberry; "A Land Beyond the River" by Loften Mitchell; and "Purlie Victorious" by Ossie Davis. The third volume includes the poetry of Arna Bontemps, Countee Cullen, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Angelina W. Grimké, Robert Hayden, Langston Hughes, Claude McKay, and others. The fourth volume includes the essays, speeches, and memoirs of Claude Brown, Eldridge Cleaver, Frederick Douglass, Dick Gregory, LeRoi Jones [Imamu Amiri Baraka], Martin Luther King, Jr., Booker T. Washington, Malcolm X, and others.
