Summary
Information is presented from Costa Rica's National Survey of Reproductive Health of Young Adults on gynecological health, smoking, and consumption of alcohol among women aged 15-24. In the six months preceding the interview, 48% reported they had had a vaginal discharge, 37% irregular menstrual cycles, 18% a menstrual period exceeding 7 days, 12% varicose veins, 8% high blood pressure, 0.8% genital warts, and 0.5% genital herpes. Half the women reporting vaginal discharges sought medical treatment. 70% of all respondents, 40% of those with sexual experience, 95% of those aged 15-17, and 49% aged 20-24 had never had a Pap smear. Among women ever married, the proportion never having a Pap smear was 24% for those aged 20-24 and 32% for those aged 15-24. 27% of respondents reported examining their breasts monthly, while 24% reported less frequent examination and 49% reported never having examined their breasts. Monthly breast self examinations were not clearly correlated with educational level or marital status, although the proportion aged 20-24 who had never examined their breasts was 36% among women with completed secondary and 46% for all groups with lower educational levels. Fewer women who had ever been married and who belonged to the urban upper class had never examined their breasts. 5% of the total sample reported smoking and 11% reported having previously smoked. 32% reported they ever consumed alcoholic beverages. 77% who smoked but only 30% who did not smoke reported consuming alcoholic beverages.
