- Summary
- Fort Lancaster was one of the forts designed to provide protection of travelers on the Santa Antonio-Santa Fe road. Situated in the Pecos River Valley in preent-day Crockett County, Texas, this military outpost was established in 1855 and was abandoned by its Federal garrison at the beginning of the Civil War in 1861. Never again was it fully reactived. In June of 1966, archeological investigations of the site of old Fort Lancaster was undertaken by Southern Methodist University.
