- Since publication of the Second Edition, there have been many technical advances of great benefit to the medical care of the elderly. Additionally, demographic and legislative changes have resulted in new approaches to the care of sick and frail older people, with the emphasis now on integrated team work provided by medical, health and social services. These developments have necessitated a thorough revision of the book's content, and many sections have been entirely rewritten to reflect the interface between hospital and community and the new multi-disciplinary nature of geriatric care as practised by the expanded therapeutic team. The book begins with ten new case histories taking a problem-oriented approach, each one cross-referenced to the main text, with the purpose of making it as useful as possible to the practitioners in different disciplines, and in hospital or community settings. Both a handbook for medical practitioners and an introductory text for those undergoing specialist training, the book represents a general introduction to the basics of geriatric medicine and a guide to current practice for the medical, nursing and allied professions.
