Summary
Deals with the basic motifs in Wiesel's work (e.g. God's silence) in the perspective of the Jewish sources, and points out how Wiesel treats Jewish tradition after Auschwitz. Analyzes fundamental theological concepts - e.g. how is it possible to continue to believe in God, how to remember the Shoah and be able to live, and where to find hope. Divides Wiesel's work into four major parts: 1. "Im Anfang war das Schweigen": Non-Text; 2. "Im Anfang war Auschwitz": Kon-Text; 3. "Im Angang war der Glaube": Text; 4. "Am Ende bleibt die Frage": Epi-Text. Pt. 2 is written from the point of view of the victims and deals with memoirs, reports from camps, and diaries. States that although this literature is subjective in its nature and does not represent the entire truth, its contribution to remembrance is incontestable.
