- Summary
- Traces the history of the Jews in medieval Alsace, including their legal status, demography, and economic role, their settlement in Strasbourg and other major centers and their expulsion from these towns. Chronicles the pogroms of the 14th-15th centuries, especially the Armleder pogroms (1338) and those at the time of the Black Death (1349, 1379), as well as accusations of ritual murder and Host desecration. Aristocrats in debt to Jews had a stake in getting rid of them; preachers and church art inflamed the populace; and the populace - especially children and teenagers, wandering journeymen, and the peasantry - gladly vented their aggressiveness on the Jews. also describes resentment against Jewish moneylenders, fanned by the clergy, because of the ruinous interest rates forced on them by the demands of rapacious rulers.
