Summary
A study of the Dutch collective memory and reactions to the Shoah as expressed in monuments, films, literature, and television documentaries. Sketches the initial overestimation of the role of the resistance and of the population's solidarity with the Jews during the war. Describes the postwar development from silence, to misunderstanding, to a more careful and critical evaluation of the persecution of the Jews and the participation of, among others, the authorities, the railways, and the police. Notes the influence of the Eichmann trial in 1961. Deals with the impact of films and television series - e.g. "De bezetting" ("The Occupation") by L. de Jong (1960), "Shoah", "Holocaust", "Schindler's List", and "Slavetango", and Dutch literature - e.g. the diary of Anne Frank, "Het bittere kruid" ("The Bitter Herb") by Marga Minco, and "Ondergang" ("Destruction") by Jacques Presser. Supports the necessity of continuous study of the meaning of the Holocaust for society. also deals with the impact of eugenics and Nazi medical experiments.
