"Letters from the Archivo de San Francisco lend a voice to the indigenous peoples who lived in a frontier region of Argentina along the Cuarto River in the second half of the 19th century. Includes letters from natives, priests who lived in reducciones (nucleated villages) of Villa de Mercedes and Capitán Sarmiento, and political and military authorities, among others. Some important themes are evangelization of the Indians, Franciscan missionary foundings, reducciones, civil-military relations, expeditions, the Rebellion of 1784, the War of the Triple Alliance, caciques, inter-ethnic relations, haciendas, and captives"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58.
