- Summary
- The Levant is the name given in the past to the string of the towns through which European travelers had access to the East. From Constantinople to Alexandria, via Smyrna, Adana or Beirut, these towns have long been places where languages, customs and beliefs met. The hero of this novel, Ossyane, is one of these men who destiny deviated. From the agony of the Ottoman Empire to the two world wars and tragedies which, even today, tear the Middle East, Ossyaneʹs life will weigh little more than a straw in the turmoil. Patiently, he remembers, he tells his princely childhood, his crazy grandmother, his rebellious father, his fallen brother, his stay in France under the Occupation, his encounter with Clara, their moments of devotion, heroism, and dream and then the descent into hell.
