Summary
The press, law enforcement, movie and television industry and citizens alike have all recently expressed concern over the dramatic increase in the number of gangs and gang violence throughout this nation. The changing political scene, unemployment rates, the economy, drug use and gang violence all demand careful examination of what we already know about gangs and what it is we should be studying. Although ethnographic studies of gangs are rich in detail, they need to be placed into a broader historical and comparative context. Throughout this fascinating book, the authors' central theme is the wide variation in the nature of gangs and their behavior. They emphasize the characteristics that are common to most or all gangs, regardless of time, nationality, ethnicity, or gender. In this Second Edition, they hope to provide breadth and generality that may help to put separate studies of gangs in specific times and locations within an appropriate historical, comparative, and theoretical context.
